How Solana Is Bringing Stablecoins to the Mainstream

Samsung is building stablecoin transfers on Solana directly into the Samsung Wallet, in what could be one of the biggest steps yet toward mainstream consumer stablecoin adoption. At Money20/20, JD Durkin speaks with Amira Valliani, head of payments growth at the Solana Foundation, about the Samsung integration, the rapid growth of stablecoin activity on Solana, and the idea of a token supercycle.

Valliani calls the Samsung announcement the killer integration for stablecoins, saying 82 million people with Samsung devices in the United States will have instant access to stablecoins on Solana when they open their Samsung Wallet, allowing them to send money anywhere in the world with low costs and instant settlement. She says Solana has seen $5 trillion in stablecoin volume this year alone and $17 billion in stablecoins issued, with more transactions happening on Solana than on every other blockchain combined. She points to Western Union refactoring its business around stablecoins to mitigate pre-funding pools and the Bank of North Dakota using its Roughrider coin on Solana for interbank transfers.

Valliani, who is approaching five years at the Solana Foundation, says companies like Western Union, Fiserv, and the Bank of North Dakota that once made quarterly headlines are now approaching the foundation every week, a sign the industry has reached an inflection point with infrastructure that is ready and well tested after about six years of Solana mainnet data. On the token supercycle, she describes a token as a machine-readable format of an asset, pointing to growth in tokens across AI, real-world assets, and stablecoins, and says that growth will be massive over the next ten years.
