Why Banks Remain Accountable as Payments Evolve

As institutions push for seamless cross-border payments through tokenized deposits and stablecoins, they still face the friction and points of failure of traditional correspondent banking networks. At Money20/20 in Las Vegas, Remy Blaire speaks with Jim Douglas, SVP of global payments for PNC, about trust, accountability, agentic AI, and the role of stablecoins in cross-border payments.

Douglas says trust ultimately falls on the banks, since customers look to PNC to manage the many possible points of failure in moving money domestically and internationally. On agentic commerce, he notes that “agent” is a legal term in financial transactions, and that delegating authority, whether to an AI agent or a financial advisor, needs to be done pragmatically. He adds that a stablecoin or tokenized asset is only as good as the ability to get dollars back for it, and that the bank remains accountable for customer outcomes.

Douglas says KYC and fraud were among the biggest themes at this year’s event, and that the challenge is identifying partners that deliver real economic value rather than simply adding an AI wrapper. While he sees utility for stablecoins and tokenized deposits in cross-border payments, he says moving money fast is not the problem, and solutions must make sense for both the client and the bank. Looking to 2027, he says PNC is optimistic, pointing to its growth as a national bank and continued expansion, including offices in Canada.
