Tokenization Is Just Getting Started, Says Alpaca CEO

Tokenized stocks are gaining momentum as financial firms explore moving traditional securities on-chain. At Money20/20, JD Durkin speaks with Yoshi Yokokawa, co-founder and CEO of Alpaca, about the company’s role in powering the tokenized stock boom, the scale of the opportunity, and the infrastructure needed to make tokenized markets work.

Yokokawa says Alpaca provides brokerage infrastructure as a self-clearing firm with many asset classes connected to its platform, and holds a large market share in custody of the securities underlying tokenized stocks. He compares the shift to tokenization with the move from paper to computers in the 1970s, saying about $350 trillion of financial assets could move from computer-based custody to on-chain.

With the global equity market above $160 trillion and only a tiny fraction tokenized so far, Yokokawa says the industry has not even reached the first pitch, agreeing with Durkin that it is closer to the national anthem. He explains that Alpaca’s instant tokenization network is a key part of the equation because tokenized assets still need liquidity, and market makers must be able to hedge their positions with traditional securities. The network allows instant redemption from tokenized assets to traditional assets, so market makers can hold tokenized positions without worrying about hedging.
