How Rain Is Bringing Stablecoins Into Everyday Payments

Stablecoins are a major focus at Money20/20 as businesses look to modernize payment systems built decades ago. On Taking Stock, JD Durkin speaks with Farooq Malik, CEO of Rain, which provides technology that allows businesses to build payment products powered by stablecoins, about the role of tokenized money in the future of payments and the company’s growing list of partners.

Malik says the current payment system runs on mainframes from decades ago, and that the same kind of innovation that transformed communication can be applied to money movement. He explains that in a tokenized world, the dollar you receive is the sender’s dollar rather than a bank’s, which can make financial products more efficient and reduce costs for end users. Rather than replacing traditional payments, he expects stablecoins to be added alongside existing methods, saying every business, bank, and broker will have to figure out how to engage with tokenized money and that there will be nowhere to hide from it.

Malik describes Rain as a full-stack money movement provider offering everything a company needs to embed a dollar or financial services product, including wallets, the ability to move into and out of stablecoins, and spending stablecoins over the Visa and Mastercard networks. He says forward-looking companies like Western Union and MoneyGram came to Rain for a partner willing to help design solutions for this new innovation cycle. Rain is also working with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit Pistons, and universities including the University of Michigan, Penn State, and LSU to add rewards that let people earn while they transact.
