ZeroTier’s Pitch Win Highlights the Quantum Threat to Finance

ZeroTier has won the Money20/20 startup pitch competition as the threat of quantum computing pushes financial institutions to rethink how they protect their data. At Money20/20 in Las Vegas, JD Durkin speaks with Robert Stevenson, chief commercial officer at ZeroTier, and Dalia Kamar, head of investor and startup programs at Money20/20, about the win, the rise of post-quantum security, and what investors are looking for in fintech startups.

Stevenson calls the win validation for a company that has just entered the finance space with its platform, which provides cloud-based infrastructure designed to seamlessly connect people, places, and devices. He says ZeroTier Quantum, announced in March, is post-quantum secure as mandates for post-quantum cryptography come down across defense, government, and finance, pointing to SWIFT’s plans and a new Treasury task force. He explains that the encryption protecting everyday activities like logging into a bank has been around for three decades and could be broken when quantum computers arrive, which he expects around 2029 or 2030, and that migrating cryptography across a bank’s systems can take months or years. ZeroTier’s network overlay, he says, delivers the NSA’s highest-level security standards instantly, no matter the network setup.

Kamar says the competition brings together the best founders from more than 900 startups at the event, with the goal of intentionally connecting founders, funders, and the wider ecosystem. She says Money20/20 has expanded across six shows with programs localized to each market, and that top trends include AI, cybersecurity, and companies bringing parallel verticals into a more financially inclusive space. She adds that Money20/20 launched Capital Tables this year to bring LPs and GPs together, noting that investors everywhere are asking how to stay relevant as founders build at a rapid pace.
