Why Strong Growth and Cooling Inflation Could Be Good News for Stocks

Stocks are starting the fourth quarter on stronger footing as economic growth remains resilient and inflation shows signs of cooling. Tim Anderson, Managing Director at TJM Investments, joins JD Durkin to discuss why the latest economic data could create a constructive backdrop for markets despite higher oil prices and uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve.

Anderson points to an upward revision to second quarter GDP, strong manufacturing data and resilient consumer spending as encouraging signs for the economy. At the same time, he says cooling core inflation could give the Fed room to skip an interest rate hike in October, with the December decision depending on incoming economic data.

Looking ahead, Anderson says an employment report near expectations could reinforce a Goldilocks narrative for both inflation and economic growth. He argues that while additional rate hikes remain possible, continued progress on inflation could ultimately make further tightening unnecessary.
