Why Macro Tailwinds Could Fuel Bitcoin’s Next Leg Higher

Bitcoin is up about 40% from its June 30th close as crypto markets weigh the failure of the CLARITY Act, elevated oil prices, and high bond yields. JD Durkin speaks with Bill Barhydt, CEO of Abra, a crypto wealth management platform serving high net worth individuals, family offices, and registered investment advisors, about the regulatory landscape and the macro forces shaping crypto prices.

Barhydt says the failure of the CLARITY Act in Congress is actually a benefit in the short term, giving the SEC and CFTC room to move ahead by decree on issues like tokenization and perpetual futures. He says the key will be whether the next administration can undo those decrees, adding that the more entrenched they become in the financial services industry, the more likely they are to stay.

On Bitcoin, Barhydt says he believes the structural bull market is returning and is now in an accumulation phase. He expects the oil shock tied to conflict in the Middle East to resolve this year and says a significant drop in oil would have a boom effect on Bitcoin, since high fuel prices act as a drain on market liquidity. He also believes mid-to-long range bond yields have topped in the short term, with an accumulation phase in bonds that could last up to two years and serve as a significant tailwind for crypto, though he expects yields to move higher again three or four years out. He adds that crypto tends to react more sharply than tech stocks to changes in market liquidity.
