How Marqeta Is Shaping the Future of Card Payments

Marqeta announced at Money20/20 that Block has expanded its partnership with the payment processing platform to power its credit card on the American Express network, following Marqeta’s expanded collaboration with Coinbase on stablecoin-backed card payments. In Las Vegas, Remy Blaire speaks with Mike Milotich, CEO of Marqeta, about the Block announcement, stablecoin-backed cards, agentic commerce, and the rise of flexible credentials.

Milotich says Marqeta is moving Block’s American Express credit program onto its platform after previously doing the same for the debit program, allowing Block to manage the full continuum of debit and credit offerings on a single platform. He notes the migration was completed with no disruption to cardholders and marks Marqeta’s first program live with American Express, after years of working with Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. He explains that the card market is evolving toward a continuum of products, from debit cards with built-in buy now, pay later features to credit building, secured, and revolving credit cards, so companies can meet customers wherever they are in their financial journey.

Milotich says stablecoins and agentic commerce are dominating conversations at this year’s event, with Marqeta focused on stablecoin-backed cards that let users spend anywhere cards are accepted or withdraw local currency at ATMs. He argues that while the agentic conversation is mostly merchant-driven today, broad adoption will need to be led by issuers, since consumers already trust them and issuers can better verify identity and fight fraud. Looking ahead, he highlights flexible credentials, which let one card act as debit, credit, or buy now, pay later based on the purchase, noting live programs from Block, Affirm, and Klarna, and says he expects much wider adoption within the next one to two years.
