Strategist Warns Stocks Face a Rocky Road Into the Holidays

JD Durkin talks with Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, to wrap up a wild week on Wall Street that included a post-midterm rally, a big selloff and Apple earnings. Woods says the rally came from certainty that the election was not contested, but that cooler heads then prevailed. He says data centers were a major factor in the elections, that regulation and environmental questions will slow the data center build, and that the semiconductor index has broken down as a result.

Woods says all 11 sectors fell on Thursday and that Friday brought only slight relief. He points to risks including the war with Iran and a possible government shutdown, and compares the moment to 2018, when he says stocks sold off 10% after the midterms. He adds that, by his count, stocks were higher six months and 12 months after midterms 19 out of 19 times, but expects a rocky road over the next few weeks into the holidays.

On individual areas, Woods says energy was the worst performing sector this week, down almost 12%, though he sees it as an area to nibble or hold. He calls health care names a safe place to be into year end and highlights Dow and Unity Software as stocks to watch. The segment ends with a friendly Giants versus Eagles tie wager between Durkin and Woods.
