Alpaca Built ITN to Fix the Capital Fracturing Slowing Tokenized Stocks

Anastasia Kinsky talks with Alex Roland, general manager of tokenization at Alpaca, at the Alpaca Partners Summit in Lisbon. Roland says tokenization has been part of Alpaca’s business longer than people expect, going back to a 2022 white paper from co-founder Hitoshi that pitched an open protocol for tokenizing assets, starting with stocks. He says it has picked up over the last 2 to 3 years.

Roland says crypto-native users adopted tokenized stocks first because they liked self-custodying stocks in their own wallets and using them in DeFi. He says more traditional firms are now adding tokenized stocks alongside their regular stock products. He argues the most interesting use cases involve borrowing against or lending out a portfolio, which he says is opaque in traditional brokerage accounts but encouraged structurally in DeFi.

Roland explains that Alpaca now has 10-plus issuers across its partner base and that capital fracturing was blocking their growth. He says Alpaca built ITN, the Instant Tokenization Network, to let participants move between a token and the underlying share in real time through in-kind minting and redemption. He says it is for market makers today and that Alpaca sees a future where retail participants can tokenize their own stocks too.
