How BlackOpal Gets Emerging Market Returns Without the Credit Risk

Jason Dehni, Co-Founder and CEO of BlackOpal, joins Bassel Sabri as the firm offers global investors 8 to 12% returns in dollars from Brazilian credit card receivables, without taking on merchant credit risk, because the ultimate counterparty is Visa and Mastercard’s balance sheet.

His most important explanation is on how the structure works: instead of lending to merchants, BlackOpal buys their credit card receivables as true sales, becoming the beneficial owner on Brazil’s CIRC system. When those receivables settle, payment comes directly from the acquirer bank, not the merchant. And under Brazilian central bank Resolution 522, in the event of an acquirer bank failure, Visa and Mastercard are unconditionally liable to make whole all processed payments.

On currency risk, the hedge is a 30-day rolling non-deliverable forward covering not just the principal but the rolling yield, with offshore settlement, so no physical exchange of currencies is required.
