Banks Are Blocking AI Agents, and Mural Has a Plan

Every payment depends on banks, card networks, compliance checks, and currencies agreeing with each other, and now AI agents want to be the ones hitting send. Kristin Myers talks with Sinclair Toffa, co-founder and CEO of Mural, a company that gives fintechs and other platforms one system for accounts, payments, identity, and compliance across traditional banking rails and stablecoins. Mural says it has processed more than $2 billion in payment volume across 128 countries since launching its API in 2025, and Tether just led its $15 million Series A, bringing total funding to $28 million.

Toffa says his grandfather is from Togo and that growing up moving money across borders, with slow transfers and hidden fees of 5% to 15%, shaped the company. He and co-founder Chris Fernandes met at Palantir, where they unified fragmented data for large companies, and he says money movement has the same fragmentation problem. He describes Mural as a compliant system of record, with a Global Account that handles fiat currencies and stablecoins under the hood, and says an average enterprise manages money across five banks, 40 accounts, and 12 payment providers.

With major US banks restricting outside AI agents from customer accounts, Toffa argues people should stop connecting their existing bank accounts to agents and instead give agents dedicated wallets with spending policies, starting with amounts like $50 to $200. He says businesses will need to Know Your Agent, and that Mural is reusing its refund, recall, and fraud tools for agent mistakes. He also explains why Mural is focused on Latin America, including Argentina, and says it builds trust through audit logs, licensing, and SOC 2 Type II compliance. Asked about an IPO, he says the focus is on building the team and growing.
