Africa Has $4 Trillion in Domestic Savings: It Is Not a Gap, It Is a Work in Progress

Sanjeev Gupta, CEO and Board Member at the Africa Finance Corporation Foundation, joins Raghda Ibraheem with a reframe that changes the entire Africa investment conversation: the continent does not have a financing gap. It has a matching problem, and that is a very different thing to solve.

His most important correction is on the numbers: the $2 trillion in domestic African capital figure understates reality. Data suggests it is closer to $4 trillion in African domestic savings already in the system. And the so-called $300 billion gap is not a crack in the system, it is work in progress about matching capital that is available to opportunities that are obvious.

On carbon credits, his case is the most compelling in the conversation: Africa emits less than 3% of the world’s emissions but absorbs approximately 70% through its carbon sinks, mangroves, and forests. The world is essentially enjoying a free ride. The greenwashing problem is real, but it does not invalidate the asset. The asset exists. The question is how Africa monetises it, and uses that money for its own development.
