Why AI Agents Are Now the Fourth Party in Every Payment Transaction

Dr. Samer Soliman, Group Chief Executive Officer of Arab Financial Services, joins Nameer Khan on Capital Markets: Wall Street to MENA as the payments processor, serving more than 60 banks across 20 markets, identifies AI agents as a fundamentally new participant in the payments ecosystem requiring entirely new rules.

His clearest framing: the payments ecosystem always had four participants, issuer, acquirer, payment scheme, and customer or merchant. AI agents introduce a fifth. That means rewriting the rules of acceptance, tokenising agent identities, and determining what happens with chargebacks.

On whether the Gulf is positioned to write these rules first, his answer is unambiguous: 100%. The region’s young population and speed of technology adoption is unmatched, and AFS has already proven it in the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt.
