Strong Bank Earnings Meet Inflation and Tech Concerns

Early gains in big bank stocks faded after earnings as the broader market struggled to find direction ahead of the September inflation report. FINTECH.TV correspondent Mark Payton joins Remy Blaire live from the Cboe trading floor in Chicago to break down the session and what prediction market traders expect from tomorrow’s CPI data.

Payton reports that the Dow gave back much of its early gain while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq traded slightly lower. Goldman Sachs reported a stronger quarter, with stock trading revenue jumping 72% from a year ago, while semiconductor stocks, especially memory chip companies, remained under pressure as competition from China grows. The VIX is trading around 15.3, and with the bond market back open after the holiday, the 10-year Treasury yield is around 5.2%.

Looking ahead to the September CPI report at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, Payton says Polymarket traders see about a 49% chance that inflation comes in at 0.6% for the month and a 35% chance it comes in at 0.5%. Forecasts call for overall inflation to rise 0.6% compared with 0.2% for core inflation, suggesting higher energy prices could be pushing the headline number up. With producer prices also expected to rise and ADP data showing hiring slowed a little, he says the Fed could face a tricky combination of slower hiring and inflation that is still picking up.
