Stocks Slide as Hot CPI Revives Rate Hike Fears

Stocks are under pressure after a hotter-than-expected inflation report raised the possibility of another Federal Reserve rate increase this month. FINTECH.TV correspondent Mark Payton joins Remy Blaire live from the Cboe trading floor in Chicago to break down the market reaction and how prediction market traders are adjusting their expectations for the October Fed meeting.

Payton reports that the S&P 500 is down about 0.7%, while the VIX is up but relatively contained around the 16 level, suggesting investors are not anticipating a dramatic increase in volatility. The 10-year Treasury yield is climbing, oil is moving higher on continued supply concerns in the Middle East, and the financial sector is showing some weakness, with Bank of America and Morgan Stanley shares lower following earnings while BlackRock moves higher.

Citing Reuters, Payton says interest rate markets put the probability of an October rate increase at about 22% before the CPI report, jumping to around 46% afterward. On Polymarket, traders see around a 62% probability that the Fed leaves rates unchanged compared with 39% for a quarter-point increase. The September report showed consumer prices rising 3.7% annually, with gasoline accounting for more than half of the monthly increase, and Payton notes that while holding rates steady remains the favorite, another hike is now a much more realistic possibility, with PPI data and remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh still ahead.
