Small Businesses Are Heading Into the Holidays With Flat Sales: Pie Is Here to Fix That

Syed Ali, Co-Founder and CEO of Pie, returns at the NYSE on Capital Markets: Wall Street to MENA, as the holiday season approaches and small businesses face a familiar squeeze: flat sales, tight labour markets, and rising costs, with AI as the most accessible tool available to close the gap.

His read on the small business landscape right now is honest and grounded: sales are flat, expenses are going up, and staffing remains the hardest problem. A third of small business owners say they cannot fill jobs. Pie’s voice agent, which picks up phone calls, handles bookings, and answers customer queries, is the most direct answer to that staffing gap. Miss a phone call during the holiday rush and you miss a sale.

On whether AI means small businesses will hire fewer people, his answer is the most optimistic in the conversation: businesses are in the business of grow. If AI makes them more profitable, they will open a second location, then a third, and hire more people. AI does not shrink businesses. It gives them the foundation to expand.
