Markets Brace for Higher Oil Prices and Fed Rate Hike

U.S. stocks are under pressure as oil prices push above $100 a barrel and bond yields continue to rise. With fresh inflation data in focus ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, investors are weighing the impact of higher energy prices, interest rates and ongoing geopolitical risks.

Jonathan Corpina, Senior Managing Partner at Meridian Equity Partners, says volatility remains elevated across asset classes, but the VIX has yet to reflect the level of uncertainty investors are facing. He also discusses expectations for the Federal Reserve, with markets increasingly anticipating a rate hike and looking for clues about the central bank’s thinking and future policy direction.

Despite the near term headwinds, Corpina says the broader economic picture remains positive. Strong earnings, capital spending, renewed M&A activity and a growing IPO market suggest companies remain confident, although inflation, oil prices, interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty could continue to limit market gains.

Corpina also highlights the sectors attracting investor attention, including technology, financials, banks and defensive dividend stocks. With cash still sitting on the sidelines and midterm elections approaching, he expects markets to remain choppy while investors wait for greater clarity on the economy and monetary policy.
