Jeff O’Connor Warns of a Hidden Liquidity Problem

U.S. stock trading volumes have surged nearly 60% this year, but Jeffrey O’Connor, U.S. Head of Market Structure at Liquidnet, says the headline numbers are hiding a deeper liquidity problem. While trading activity has increased, the depth of liquidity available to institutional investors in the S&P 500 has fallen, making it more difficult to navigate increasingly complex markets.

O’Connor says rising rates, macroeconomic uncertainty and a fragmented equity market are affecting how institutional investors enter and exit positions. He also highlights the growing role of non bank market makers, which now account for roughly half of U.S. market volume, making smart execution and access to liquidity increasingly important.

Regulatory changes are another major focus, with the SEC considering a full rescission of the order protection rule. O’Connor says the proposal could represent one of the biggest market structure changes since Reg NMS was introduced, potentially affecting market fragmentation and the national best offer.

Looking ahead, O’Connor expects volatility to remain a key concern as investors face the Federal Reserve decision, third quarter earnings and the midterm elections. He says trade sizes are declining and institutional investors will need broader access to liquidity providers as market conditions continue to evolve.
