How Intake Breathing Is Turning Nasal Strips Into a Wellness Brand

Nasal strips have lived in the cold and flu aisle for decades, but Intake Breathing believes better breathing belongs in the same daily routine as sleep trackers and supplements. On Startup to Stock Exchange, Kristin Myers speaks with Alex Hauck, CEO of Intake Breathing, about the company’s magnetic nasal breathing system, the struggles it overcame to scale, and its push from direct-to-consumer sales into retail.

Hauck explains that Intake is a patented two-part magnetic breathing system that uses disposable adhesive tabs on the outside of the nose and a reusable magnetic band, available in different sizes, to open the nasal passages to a fixed width. Unlike traditional one-size-fits-all strips, he says the rigid band will not collapse on inhale, and while it does not fix issues like a deviated septum, it can help people breathe past congestion and other obstructions. The product grew out of sports, invented by his father-in-law to solve trouble breathing through his nose while wearing motocross goggles, and the company says more than 1 million customers have used it. Hauck says Intake nearly ran out of money when it could not scale manufacturing of its tabs, leading him to sell his truck, have his wife take another job, bring in a roommate, and personally guarantee an EIDL loan, before the company fixed its supply chain in 2023 after a year and a half of R&D with a manufacturer in China, with production since brought back to the US.

Hauck says sleep remains the company’s core use case, but customers are increasingly using Intake throughout the day for focus and workouts, typically through monthly subscriptions for replacement tabs. Intake is now expanding from direct-to-consumer into retail with Camino Partners, whose team he credits with helping build KIND into a category leader, as it works with retailers to define where the product belongs, from wellness and sleep to athletics. He says success in five years would mean Intake becoming the legacy brand people think of when they think of breathing.
