Where Giant Ventures Is Looking for the Next Billion Dollar AI Company

Artificial intelligence may live in the cloud, but the infrastructure behind it is creating opportunities across energy, chips, data centers, robotics, manufacturing and other parts of the physical economy. Zenetta Burger, partner at Giant Ventures, joins Kristin Myers to discuss where the venture capital firm sees the next generation of category-defining companies emerging.

Burger explains what Giant looks for in founders from the earliest stages through growth, including ambitious visions of the future, founder-market fit, adaptability and the ability to scale. She also discusses portfolio companies including Carbon Robotics, Efficient Computer and Cyera as examples of how AI is moving beyond software and into agriculture, computing and cybersecurity.

One of the biggest opportunities may be energy. Burger says AI’s enormous demand for power could either inhibit growth or become extremely expensive, but it is also accelerating investment in new energy infrastructure. With data centers facing power constraints, Giant is watching nuclear, batteries, geothermal and other technologies capable of delivering power quickly.

Burger also addresses concerns that AI has entered a bubble, saying inflated prices and a generational technological shift can exist at the same time. Looking further ahead, she points to reshoring, critical supply chains, agriculture, mining, heavy industry and manufacturing as areas investors should watch as AI reaches deeper into the physical economy.
