Founder & CEO of Creditas: Sergio Furio on AI in Emerging Market Lending

Sergio Furio, Founder and CEO of Creditas, joins Johny Fernandez from the New York Stock Exchange as the Brazilian fintech, which raised approximately $1 billion and uses secured lending against homes and cars to cut through Brazil’s triple-digit consumer credit rates, reveals that productivity per employee has risen fivefold in four years: revenues doubled while the team halved.

His most important point on AI is the most honest in the conversation: yes, it means fewer jobs in companies like Creditas. But fewer employees reduces costs, which allows cheaper consumer financing, which drives higher demand for credit, which generates employment in other areas. The net effect is not job destruction, it is job transformation.

On what the Gulf can learn from Brazil’s fintech boom, his three lessons are precise: a central bank that actively supports fintech; a deep capital markets environment with fixed income investors hungry for high-quality assets; and a focus on the next generation of products, credit and investments, rather than continuing to follow the payments vertical that has already had its decade.
