Banking the Unbanked With Stablecoins, the Next Frontier of Financial Inclusion

Torab Torabi, CEO of Movement, joins Wall Street to Mena following a landmark partnership, global payment platform Sarb has selected Movement as the exclusive stablecoin settlement layer for the first fully self-managed digital bank in the MENA region, targeting the 1.4 billion people globally who remain unbanked.

His thesis is straightforward: over 90% of the world’s currencies have lost value against the dollar over the past decade. People in underserved markets, from Afghanistan to Ethiopia, are turning to stablecoins not because of ideology but because it works, it’s accessible, and it’s permissionless. He points to Afghan entrepreneurs running Amazon dropshipping businesses who can’t hold dollars to pay Google or Facebook for ads, stablecoins have become their workaround.

On MENA’s rise as a digital asset hub, he points to demographics, some of the world’s youngest populations, who have no attachment to legacy systems. His most memorable line: for his children, Bitcoin is just as old as gold. It’s always existed in their lifetime.

Looking ahead, Movement is focused on stablecoin rails, in-app gold purchases, and tokenising government treasury bonds, with central banks already asking for it.
