How Tractian Is Using Physical AI to Prevent Downtime

Unplanned downtime is a $1 trillion problem for industry, and physical AI is emerging as a way to tackle it as the data center boom puts new pressure on aging equipment. On Taking Stock, JD Durkin speaks with Igor Marinelli, CEO and co-founder of Tractian, a physical AI and industrial operations platform, about how the company helps businesses predict and prevent equipment failures.

Marinelli says Tractian is using technology and AI to solve unplanned downtime, the problem behind goods that fail to arrive on time. He explains that while attention in data centers is focused on GPUs and chips, many of the supporting assets, including chillers, HVAC systems, evaporators, and transformers, use the same technology as decades ago. Without a platform like Tractian, he says operators have to rely on redundancy to meet their service levels, which is expensive and does not guarantee smooth operations.

Marinelli describes Tractian’s product as information, comparing it to Bloomberg for industrial assets, using today’s data to predict what will happen to equipment tomorrow. He says the system starts at 88% accuracy and quickly reaches 95% as customers upload data sheets and equipment details and interact with the platform, guiding them on which assets to maintain today, tomorrow, or a year from now. He adds that customers can scale without growing their teams, with the same three users moving from managing ten machines to 100 or 1,000.
