AmaniLabs’ Deborah Webster on Why Only a Crisis Will Make the AI Industry Change Course

Deborah Webster, Founder of AmaniLabs, ForHumanity Fellow, and author of Better Than Your Behaviour, returns Capital Markets: Wall Street to MENA as Elon Musk predicts AI will do any job that does not require physical touch by next year, while simultaneously calling for less regulation, and a former Anthropic and OpenAI safety researcher publicly warns that superintelligence could end humanity.

Her read on the researcher’s departure is measured and informed: this is not a one-off. Safety researchers have been leaving leading AI labs in a pattern. Dario Amodei himself warned his own team that Anthropic’s culture would probably change as more people join just for the money. Looking at the quality and calibre of talent a company can attract and retain is a genuine signal, for buyers of the technology, investors in it, and anyone considering working for it.

On whether AI will self-regulate in time, looking at history, only a crisis makes us course correct. The more optimistic scenario is regulation arriving before catastrophe. The more concerning one is what she calls death by a thousand cuts, where harms accumulate gradually and power is concentrated in very few hands.
