Why Hisham Jazzar Left US Venture Capital to Build THNDR

Live at Money20/20 Middle East, Dalia Kamar, head of investor and startup programs at Money20/20 Global, talks with Hisham Jazzar, general manager at THNDR Saudi Arabia. Jazzar describes THNDR as an investment app built for everyday retail individuals and traders across the Arab world. He says the company started in 2020 targeting Egypt, is now the largest stockbroker there, and moves roughly 40% of the orders on the Egyptian stock exchange.

Jazzar says THNDR has raised roughly $37 million from investors including Tiger Global, Prosus Ventures, BECO Capital and Y Combinator. He says the company launched in the UAE last year and is working towards launching in Saudi Arabia. He says THNDR offers US capital markets but that its mission is to drive more investment toward local companies, and that its dream is one app connecting people to markets across the Arab world.

Jazzar explains why he returned to Saudi Arabia after 12 years in the United States, including time in venture capital. He says he did not see a real problem in the regional venture capital scene and believes the problem sits at the public market level. In his view, more people with startup and technology mindsets should work on public market problems so more companies graduate into the public market.
