You Don’t Make Money Trading Politics, Says Roundhill Strategist

The day after the midterm elections, JD Durkin talks with Drew Pettit, chief investment strategist at Roundhill, about the market’s rally and what comes next. Pettit says he was a little surprised by the rally but that it reminds him of 2016, and says in his personal view you do not make money trading politics, you make money trading long-run fundamentals. He says the reaction suggests the overnight move was overblown and the secular story has not changed, and he points to the October jobs report on Friday as the next big catalyst.

Pettit says the next clearing event is the Anthropic IPO. He says he wants to see the deal around $1.5 trillion and priced sometime in the middle of November, and that once that is known, investors can refocus on the long term in semis, software, and the broader AI trade instead of freeing up cash for the deal. On earnings season, he says growth expectations are high, so companies need better-than-average beats, and that beats are coming in closer to 4% than the 5% he expected. He also points to gross margins, noting AMD gave up a big gain after a gross margin surprise.

Pettit expects the AI trade to stay choppy and recommends a barbell, pairing semis and software with HALO stocks, which he describes as heavy-asset, low-obsolescence cyclicals that benefit from lower rates and solid economic data. He says that combination is how investors can stay in the market through AI volatility while getting some of the cyclical rebound.
