Barq’s Path From Saudi Unicorn to Global Fintech Player

Barq has become one of the fastest-growing financial platforms in the world, capturing more than 70% of Saudi Arabia’s bankable population, surpassing 15 million users, processing over $120 billion in transactions, and reaching unicorn status with a $1.85 billion valuation. At Money20/20 in Las Vegas, Remy Blaire speaks with Ahmed Alenazi, CEO of Barq, about how the company scaled so quickly, how it is using AI, and its plans for regional and global expansion.

Alenazi says Barq holds an EMI license and offers lending, currently serving Saudi nationals and residents, and started with consumer payments in an already competitive market. He explains that the company focused on avoiding ongoing customer acquisition incentives, instead building products customers love so they stay and bring others, creating a network effect. Now about two years old and approaching 17 million users, Barq built its data structure for automation and machine learning from day one and is using AI for code review, development, and internal operations. He says the company has fewer than 200 employees and believes its revenue per employee is among the highest globally, noting that 70% of Saudis are under 35.

Alenazi says Barq launched its business offering at Money20/20 Middle East a few weeks ago and has received in-principle approval from the central bank for financing, with three new products coming soon. He stresses that expanding into new markets requires understanding local customers rather than copying one strategy, and that the company works to stay lean and agile. Pointing to global players like Revolut and Nubank as inspiration, he says Barq aims to become the leader in its region over the next five years, with an acquisition in Bahrain, licenses across the GCC, and a focus on the money movement corridor between the GCC and Pakistan.
