Small Caps Hold Up as Traders Brace for Amazon and Intel Earnings

Big technology stocks are under pressure while smaller companies move higher, as investors look ahead to earnings from Amazon and Intel after the closing bell. FINTECH.TV correspondent Mark Payton joins Remy Blaire live from the Cboe trading floor in Chicago to break down the split in the market and what prediction market traders expect from tonight’s reports.

Payton says the Nasdaq is under pressure while the Russell 2000 is gaining around seven-tenths of a percent, suggesting the selling in technology is not spreading across the entire market. He adds that the VIX has been easing despite the tech weakness, indicating investors are not treating it as a broader selloff, with significant moves in individual stocks but a calmer picture overall.

Heading into earnings, Payton says traders earlier priced in roughly a 66% chance that Amazon would beat its earnings target of $2 per share, but those odds have dropped to around 39%. For Intel, traders are more confident, putting the chance of earnings topping $0.40 per share at around 85%. He says investors will focus on Amazon’s AWS cloud business and AI spending, and on chip demand and turnaround momentum at Intel, noting that the probabilities reflect specific earnings targets rather than stock direction, and that investors want to see growth, profitability, and a return on spending.
