Egypt’s Blue Chips Are Down : Here Is How to Tell a Bargain From a Trap

Ahmed Elleissy Nassef, Board Member and International Strategic Management Consultant and Author of Stories of Corporate Success and Failure, joins Bassel Sabri as the Egyptian pound hits a record low of 56 to the dollar and two thirds of Egypt’s blue chips have fallen more than the index in dollar terms.

His most important framework comes from Harvard Business School research: of the Fortune 500 companies from the 1960s, fewer than 50 remain today. The three signals that separate a cyclical company from a failing one are market share, a cyclical company moves with the economy while a declining one consistently loses ground to competitors, sustainable cash flow, because profit is an idea but cash is reality, and whether management is protecting competitive advantage or just surviving short term.

On pricing power, the question every investor is asking right now his answer is precise: passing on 100% of the currency devaluation is almost always a mistake. What matters is brand strength, price elasticity, and whether the price increase is coupled with innovation and cost efficiency. There is no one size fits all. The answer differs by brand, not just by company.
