Why AI Is Fueling the Energy Sector’s Big Run

Energy stocks are running away with the market in 2026, with the sector up nearly 60% year to date, as ExxonMobil and Chevron prepare to report earnings and investors look for record production and bigger shareholder returns. Remy Blaire speaks with Rob Thummel, senior portfolio manager at Tortoise Capital Advisors, about whether the energy rally has more room to run, how AI is reshaping energy demand, and the names he is watching.

Thummel says energy was underappreciated and underinvested coming into the year, and that investors are now playing catch-up. He notes the forward curve for oil is about 50% higher this year than last, which he expects to drive higher earnings and free cash flow, and says dividends from Exxon and Chevron should remain steady, while a boost to their buyback programs could be a catalyst into 2027. He sees AI as a major driver of energy demand, calling electricity the new oil, and argues the US can win the AI race because it is the lowest-cost producer of natural gas, creating opportunities for producers, midstream companies, and other infrastructure plays.

Thummel highlights Vertiv as a leader in liquid cooling and power management, which he expects to see expanding gross margins that the market is not yet reflecting, and Vistra, an independent power producer with assets primarily in Texas, as a beneficiary of data centers coming online in the state. He explains that US natural gas prices are low because of ample supply and storage from the shale revolution, while prices remain high in Europe and Asia, and says lower prices have spurred new industrial, manufacturing, and AI demand. Looking ahead, he is watching diesel-driven inflation and the Strait of Hormuz, which he says will be important for decades, and says Tortoise focuses on the infrastructure enabling AI, including electricity, memory, storage, and cooling.
