Deepfakes, Ransomware and AI Agents: The Growing Threat to Financial Security

Artificial intelligence is transforming financial services and everyday commerce, but it is also creating new opportunities for cybercriminals to launch sophisticated scams, automate attacks and exploit security vulnerabilities. At Money20/20 USA 2026 in Las Vegas, Remy Blaire speaks with Ari Redbord, Global Head of Policy at TRM Labs, about the rapid rise of AI-powered financial crime, the growing threat of ransomware and how blockchain intelligence and artificial intelligence can help strengthen cybersecurity and national security.

Redbord examines how criminals are increasingly using generative AI to develop convincing phishing attacks, deepfake videos and sophisticated impersonation schemes. He highlights an approximately 500% increase in AI-enabled scams and fraud over the past year, explaining why traditional approaches to fraud detection are facing growing challenges. As malicious actors gain access to increasingly powerful tools, financial institutions and security providers must evolve their defenses to protect consumers and sensitive financial information.

The conversation also explores TRM Labs’ Ardence platform, which combines blockchain intelligence with off-chain information from more than 50 data partners. Redbord explains how integrating blockchain transaction data with threat intelligence, shipping records and other external information can help investigators uncover criminal networks and identify suspicious activity. He discusses why artificial intelligence is becoming an important tool for connecting information across digital and traditional financial systems.

Cybersecurity and national security are another major focus as Redbord warns about the potential consequences of AI-powered ransomware attacks. He discusses how autonomous systems could make sophisticated cyberattacks easier to conduct, potentially increasing threats against hospitals, electricity networks, water systems and other critical infrastructure. Drawing on TRM Labs’ research into ransomware activity, he explains why governments and security organizations must invest in proactive detection, stronger defenses and AI-driven threat intelligence.

Despite these risks, Redbord shares an optimistic perspective on the potential of artificial intelligence to improve everyday life. He describes his experience using Claude to create an AI shopping agent that successfully located a newly released pair of Caitlin Clark Nike shoes and added them to his shopping cart. The example illustrates how agentic commerce could transform retail experiences by allowing autonomous systems to search for products, monitor availability and assist with purchasing decisions.
