SharpByte Capital’s Marco Manoppo on Why Crypto M&A Is Only Getting Started

Marco Manoppo, General Partner at SharpByte Capital, joins Bassel Sabri at Definition by Accountable at Token 2049 in Singapore straight from the institutional infrastructure race panel, and immediately reframes what institutional crypto adoption actually means in 2026 versus 2017.

His most important point is on maturation: the bar that institutions and VCs now apply to crypto founders is dramatically higher than any previous cycle. No longer can a 19-year-old founder with no product raise at a $30 million valuation. The rigour being demanded, proper business management, clear revenue models, genuine product-market fit, reflects a space that has grown up.

On where M&A is heading, his read is direct: reduced VC funding has forced teams that could not raise to run down their runway over two to three years, and the wave of consolidation that produces will continue for at least another one to two years. The winners in two years will not be those who competed on pure capital, they will be those who strategically aligned their investors and partners to build genuine moats.
