Coinshift’s Tarun Gupta on Why the Next Wave of Founders Will Raise From Stablecoins, Not Just VCs

Tarun Gupta, Founder and CEO of Coinshift, joins Bassel Sabri at Definition by Accountable at Token 2049 in Singapore as the company, which started managing $1 billion in DAO treasury assets in 2021, launched a yield-bearing stablecoin that scaled to $170 million in three to four months, and then rebuilt its entire issuance and compliance infrastructure from scratch after Paxos shut down the underlying product, emerges with a clear new mission.

Stablecoins are at $200 billion and heading to $1 trillion. When that cash moves on-chain it looks for yield. Yield requires credit. And that credit needs to come from real economic activities, infrastructure, reinsurance, direct lending, not just on-chain leverage loops that shrink when the market goes down. The next wave of founders, he argues, will raise directly from stablecoins rather than only through VC equity.

On trust in yield-bearing products, his checklist is the most practical in the conversation: if someone is offering 10% when treasuries are at 4%, that 600 basis points of extra yield is coming from somewhere, and if you do not understand the risk behind it, you are likely to lose money. If an issuer is not sharing full transparency around their loan book and line items, that is a red flag.
