CBI Built Its Own Innovation Arm From Scratch and Plans to Make It Redundant in Five Years

Giovanni Everduin, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at CBI and Co-Founder of CBI’s innovation arm, joins Raghda Ibraheem as the bank takes a fundamentally different approach to innovation: instead of partnering with fintechs from inside the bank, it built a separate entity with a different licence, different culture, different risk appetite, and a mandate to try things the bank cannot.

His most important framing is on what success actually looks like: in two years, if CBI’s innovation arm has done its job, it should effectively not exist, because the culture, systems, and willingness to innovate it was built to create would have been embedded back into the bank itself. The goal is to make itself redundant.

On AI in banking, his concern is the one that matters most practically: answers have become free, but questions have become the currency. AI gives you the forklift to carry heavy weight, but if you stop asking your own questions, you stop building the intellectual muscle that makes you genuinely useful. Being AI-native is knowing how to operate a forklift. Being intellectually curious is going to the gym.
