Higher Treasury Yields Are Raising the Bar for Stocks

Treasury yields are climbing to multi decade highs as investors navigate the start of the fourth quarter, renewed bond volatility and another key jobs report. Brian Szytel, Co-Chief Investment Officer at The Bahnsen Group, joins Remy Blaire to discuss why higher borrowing costs are raising the bar for equity valuations and making selectivity increasingly important for investors.

Szytel says market multiples have already compressed this year even as earnings have continued to grow. With the 10 year Treasury yield above 5%, he explains why dividend growing companies and other income producing investments could become more attractive compared with high multiple growth stocks that depend on earnings further into the future.

Meanwhile, Micron’s latest earnings reinforce the strength of AI demand, but Szytel argues that strong results do not eliminate valuation risk in a higher for longer rate environment. He discusses why investors may need to distinguish between companies vulnerable to AI disruption and businesses positioned to benefit from AI partnerships while maintaining a focus on reasonable valuations and free cash flow.
