Why Energy Prices Are Keeping Inflation in Focus

Energy prices remain a key driver of inflation as investors prepare for a busy week of economic data, including PCE, consumer spending and the jobs report. Bilal Little, Global ETF Strategist at Direxion, Kristin Myers to discuss how energy costs are affecting consumers and what investors should watch as the market enters the final quarter.

Little says higher energy and diesel prices are increasing the cost of transporting goods and services, with those costs ultimately reaching consumers. He also describes a K shaped economy, where lower income consumers remain focused on discount retailers while households with greater exposure to equities may be experiencing a very different financial environment.

The conversation also examines the data investors are watching most closely. Little says the labor market remains particularly important because employment provides the income that supports consumer spending, while inflation and real spending will also help shape the Federal Reserve’s decisions on interest rates.

Looking ahead, Little says investors should pay attention to rate sensitive areas of the market, including small caps and energy names, while considering broader equity diversification. For his weekly market call, he highlights consumer staples, the front and intermediate parts of the Treasury curve, and dividend paying equities as areas investors may want to watch.
