Nigeria’s Senate Capital Markets Chair on Why African Exchanges Must List Digital Assets Now

Senator Dr. Osita Izunaso, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Markets and Financial Institutions in Nigeria, joins Bassel Sabri with a message that carries the weight of legislative authority: African stock exchanges cannot afford to wait for perfect regulation before listing digital assets. The window is open now, and the countries that move first will capture the capital flows that follow.

His case for Nigeria specifically is grounded in scale. Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa, the largest population, and one of the most active crypto user bases in the world. The regulatory framework is moving, the Securities and Exchange Commission has issued guidelines, the Central Bank of Nigeria has reversed its earlier ban on crypto transactions, and the legislature is now actively working on a comprehensive digital assets bill.

His most important point for international investors is on the convergence between traditional capital markets and digital assets. The Nigerian Exchange Group is already in dialogue about digital asset listing frameworks. What Senator Izunaso is pushing for is not a replacement of existing infrastructure, it is an extension of it. African capital markets have always been about mobilising domestic savings and attracting foreign capital. Digital assets, properly regulated, do exactly that, but faster, cheaper, and at greater scale than anything that came before.
