What Traders Need to Know About 3x Leveraged ETNs

Leveraged and inverse trading tools are expanding as active investors look to magnify daily views on sectors and themes, and REX Financial has added 19 new tickers to its MicroSectors lineup issued by Bank of Montreal, including MNGU, the first ETP linked to the NYSE MaNGoS+ Index with +3x and -3x daily resets. At Stocktoberfest in New York City, Remy Blaire speaks with Michael Eschmann, managing director of business development at REX Financial, about how these products work, who they are built for, and the risks traders need to understand.

Eschmann explains that MicroSectors is a suite of leveraged ETNs that REX partners on with Bank of Montreal, and that because ETNs are unsecured debt of the issuer, investors need to consider the issuer’s credit rating along with other risks. He says the products are designed for sophisticated, high conviction traders looking to amplify a view on a sector or theme, and stresses that because the products reset daily, returns over longer periods are affected by daily compounding. He notes that leveraged products have been in the market for 20 years and have grown significantly over the past five years.

On MaNGoS, Eschmann says the 10-stock index covers the largest and most liquid US tech stocks and includes Anthropic and OpenAI, which are not yet public, so the ETN currently excludes those two names until after their IPOs. He describes how traders often use leveraged and inverse products to hedge positions or free up cash, and explains that REX considers whether an index could move 33% in a single day, while Bank of Montreal evaluates whether it can hedge its exposure as products scale. He urges retail traders to stay diligent about education, particularly around the daily reset nature of these products.
