Wall Street Under Pressure as Oil Tops $100 and Yields Rise

Wall Street is facing renewed pressure ahead of the opening bell as rising oil prices, elevated Treasury yields and ongoing inflation concerns weigh on markets. FinTech TV correspondent Mark Payton joins us live from the Chicago trading floor to break down the latest premarket activity and what traders are watching.

U.S. crude is trading around $92 a barrel, while Brent crude is above $104 as tensions in the Middle East raise concerns about global supplies. The 10 year Treasury yield is hovering around 5.31%, adding pressure to stocks, particularly technology companies. Meanwhile, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting showed unanimous support for a 0.25 percentage point rate hike, with most officials expecting another increase could be needed later this year.

Payton also discusses the latest jobs data, with weekly jobless claims falling to 190,000, below expectations, suggesting layoffs remain relatively low. Traders are also keeping a close eye on the VIX as they assess the impact of higher energy prices, elevated yields and the Fed’s continued focus on inflation.

The conversation also turns to the semiconductor sector following strong results from TSMC and Samsung. TSMC reported record third quarter revenue of nearly $47 billion, up 50% from a year earlier, while Samsung is projecting record quarterly operating profits of around $80 billion, driven largely by demand for AI memory chips.

Despite those strong results, shares of both companies have faced selling pressure, highlighting just how high investor expectations have become around artificial intelligence. Payton explains why investors are increasingly looking beyond record growth and asking whether companies can sustain that momentum as borrowing costs remain elevated.
