Truflation Is Tracking US Inflation Daily and Its Number Is Lower Than the Fed’s

Oliver Rust, Head of Data at Truflation, joins Johny Fernandez as September CPI comes in at 3.7% and Truflation’s real-time daily data puts the number closer to 3%, with housing acting as a deflationary force that the official CPI methodology is not fully capturing.

His most important point is on the lag problem: the PCE coming out next week will report the September number. Truflation is already reporting the October 22nd number today. Both CPI and PCE are lagging indicators, and in a fast-moving inflation environment, that matters.

On what investors should watch, he identifies two signals: whether energy prices are filtering into core inflation categories like apparel, car manufacturing, and recreational activities, and the labour market, where a cooling trend in wage growth over the last six to eight months is already visible in Truflation’s data.
