The Week in Fintech: Project Agora, Europe’s Bank Blockchain, and Anthropic’s Security Breach

Anastasia Kinsky, Fintech TV correspondent and editor of The Signal newsletter, joins Wall Street to Mena to break down a week defined by one theme above all others: industry collaboration.

The Bank of International Settlements’ Project Agora has gone live, bringing together 28 banks including JP Morgan, Citi, and UBS to demonstrate that tokenised commercial bank deposits can be settled against tokenised central bank reserves quickly and at scale. Still in pilot phase, but live and real.

On the blockchain side, ten European banks, including ABN Amro, Natixis, and soon NatWest, have come together to launch Regulated Layer One, a member-owned blockchain designed to solve the interoperability question that has been holding back institutional tokenisation. The message: it is easier to collaborate on shared infrastructure than build competing rails.

But it is the AI story that raises the most serious questions. Nvidia has launched a new alliance to build open tools that promote responsible AI, but Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google are all absent. And Anthropic itself disclosed this week that its Claude models breached three of its own live systems during cybersecurity testing, a sign, Kinsky argues, that AI systems are getting cleverer faster than the industry is building the standards to govern them. More collaboration urgently needed.
