Sonu Varghese on Inflation, AI Spending and the Market Outlook

U.S. markets are navigating an inflationary growth environment as Treasury yields remain elevated, geopolitical tensions add pressure to energy prices and investors prepare for the start of earnings season. Sonu Varghese, Chief Macro Strategist at Carson Group, joins FinTech TV to break down the latest macroeconomic trends and what they could mean for markets and monetary policy.

Varghese says the current environment is being shaped by relatively strong economic growth alongside elevated prices, creating a close connection between the bond market, equities and the broader economy. He also argues that the U.S. labor market remains relatively healthy despite softer and more volatile headline payroll numbers, with unemployment around 4.2% and the prime age employment population ratio remaining historically strong.

The conversation also examines the impact of the artificial intelligence investment boom on inflation and commodity prices. Varghese points to strong manufacturing and services activity, rising prices and shortages across commodities and components, including aluminum, copper, electrical equipment, memory and printed circuit boards. He says the massive data center buildout and AI capital spending are helping drive economic activity while also contributing to inflationary pressures.

Looking ahead to earnings season and 2027, Varghese says investors can still participate in the AI and technology investment wave but should avoid excessive concentration. He favors maintaining an overweight position in equities while diversifying across the market to build a more resilient portfolio and reduce the risk of being overly exposed to one sector.
