Oil Above $100 Puts Inflation Back in FocusChristine Short on Inflation, Oil and the Fed

U.S. markets are facing pressure as oil prices surge above $100 a barrel, producer prices remain elevated and investors turn their attention to the latest inflation data. With CPI on the horizon, markets are closely watching what higher energy costs could mean for inflation and the Federal Reserve’s next move.

Christine Short, Head of Research at TMX Wall Street Horizon, says the latest Producer Price Index showed a 0.4% monthly increase in August, while annual producer price growth reached 5.4%. With inflation still well above the Fed’s 2% target and oil prices rising, she says the focus remains firmly on whether price pressures are broadening across the economy.

Short also discusses the impact of higher gas prices on American consumers, the potential effects of U.S. and Canadian tariffs on small and mid sized businesses, and the outlook for corporate earnings. Despite the uncertainty, she says the corporate picture remains relatively strong, with expectations for continued earnings growth and strong demand for AI hardware supporting parts of the market.
