Newly Public NorthStar Earth & Space on Tracking Threats in Orbit

NorthStar Earth & Space rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange after beginning to trade on October 2nd. Ashley Mastronardi speaks with Stewart Bain, founder and CEO of NorthStar Earth & Space, about the company’s path to the public market and its work in space domain awareness, monitoring activity across the orbits surrounding Earth.

Bain describes the listing process as a remarkable experience that brought new responsibility for transparency and governance, which he says aligns with the clients the company serves. He explains that the economy, communications, Earth observation, and military readiness all run through satellites, and that NorthStar set out to monitor activity in every near-Earth orbit, a volume he says is 200,000 times the size of all the world’s oceans combined. The company focuses mainly on algorithms, software, and imagery processing to deliver intelligence that helps clients predict threats, potential collisions, and deliberate bad acting in space.

Bain outlines the threats NorthStar watches for, including satellites maneuvering close to others, anti-satellite testing, grappling satellites a nation does not own, cyberattacks, and signal jamming. The company detects orbit changes as they happen, attributes them, and provides that information mainly to military and security customers so they can take appropriate action. While NorthStar also serves commercial operators and governments, Bain says government military services in Canada, the United States, Europe, and NATO allies are currently leading demand for space domain awareness.
