How Clio Is Reinventing Legal Work With AI

Clio has unveiled a new brand identity at ClioCon as it repositions itself as an intelligent legal work platform powered by AI. JD Durkin speaks with Jack Newton, CEO of Clio, about the company’s evolution, its new platform, and how legal AI can transform the profession while keeping lawyers accountable.

Newton describes Clio as a legal AI platform serving nearly the entire legal market, from solo practitioners and small firms to mid-market and enterprise firms, including the AmLaw 200 and large in-house counsel teams. He says the company has gone through a major evolution since announcing its $1 billion acquisition of vLex at last year’s ClioCon, combining vLex’s legal data and AI with Clio’s business-of-law platform to create what it calls the intelligent legal work platform. He notes that ClioCon, the company’s annual conference in Boston, has grown to more than 10,000 attendees, and that the newly unveiled brand reflects Clio’s transformation into what he calls the world’s first intelligent legal work platform.

On trust and accountability, Newton says legal AI dramatically amplifies and accelerates what lawyers can do, but does not change the fact that lawyers are ultimately responsible for the work they produce for clients. He explains that while agents within Clio can orchestrate large amounts of work, draft pleadings, and make recommendations, the platform is designed to keep lawyers in charge of supervising that work, an approach he says is resonating strongly with customers.
