How Biodiversity Is Changing Forestry Investment

Forestry investment is evolving as investors look beyond traditional timber production and toward the broader value of natural capital. Christian Wachtmeister, Investment Director at Qarlbo Biodiversity, joins Remy Blaire from the New York Stock Exchange to discuss how active forest management can combine financial returns with biodiversity and climate benefits.

Wachtmeister explains how Qarlbo Biodiversity integrates conservation and restoration measures into production forests, including creating dead wood, prescribed burning and setting aside areas beyond regulatory requirements. The approach is designed to improve biodiversity while creating additional revenue opportunities through carbon credits, biodiversity credits and other ecosystem services.

The conversation also explores why biodiversity is becoming increasingly relevant to investors. Wachtmeister argues that putting a value on nature can create stronger incentives for landowners to protect and restore ecosystems, while also creating more diversified and resilient revenue streams alongside traditional timber income.

Wachtmeister also discusses the role of regulation and voluntary biodiversity markets across different regions, as well as Qarlbo Biodiversity’s mission to make biodiversity investable. He explains how active management can contribute to healthier forests, potentially increase asset values and support more resilient properties over the long term.
