Automation Anywhere Bets on the Autonomous Enterprise

Automation Anywhere is expanding its AI capabilities through two major acquisitions as businesses face growing pressure to show measurable returns on their AI spending. JD Durkin speaks with Mihir Shukla, chairman and CEO of Automation Anywhere, about the company’s vision for the autonomous enterprise, its agreement to acquire Boost.ai, and where companies are seeing real returns from AI.

Shukla says he expects every enterprise to eventually become an autonomous enterprise, predicting that 50% to 80% of work will have some degree of autonomy, either fully autonomous or with a human in the loop. In that model, he says software as a service spending should fall by 30% and people would be three times more productive. He explains that Boost.ai, which specializes in conversational AI, has hundreds of customers, about 70% of them in regulated industries where workflows are complex and governance requirements are high, and that its customers can often go live within six weeks. The deal is awaiting customary regulatory approvals, which he expects in the next couple of months.

On AI returns, Shukla calls the question of whether businesses will see a return on AI spending the biggest challenge facing the industry and the primary problem Automation Anywhere aims to solve. He says the company serves more than 5,000 customers, including 50% of the Fortune 500 and 40% of the Global 2000, and has over half a billion AI agents and automations running, allowing it to predict where returns are greatest by industry and function. He adds that the company will soon launch Agent Jumpstart, a tool on its website that will give businesses a stack-ranked view of where they could see the biggest returns.
