Why Egypt’s 26% Yields Are Not Keeping Foreign Investors

Dr. Ayman Ghoneim, economic and legal expert, joins Bassel Sabri as the Egyptian pound passes 56 to the dollar and foreign investors sell over $1 billion of Treasury bills in two sessions, with the central bank deciding on rates the same day.

He sees the same test as March, under different conditions. Back then foreign holdings of pound debt fell from $39 billion to $22 billion, yet reserves, net foreign assets and the credit rating all improved. He says the flexible system has reacted far better than in 2011 or 2022.

On the 26% Treasury bill yield, he says the return foreigners actually keep is closer to 4 to 5% after tax, depreciation and risk, which may not be enough once tail risk is priced in. And he would not use a rate hike to defend the pound.
