What Careem’s Wallet Taught This Founder About the Gulf’s AI Infrastructure Bet

Junaid Iqbal, Founder and CEO of Caravan, CEO of Salt Ventures, and former Managing Director at Careem, joins Nameer Khan as crude hits $114, ten-year Treasury yields cross 5%, and the world wrestles with whether AI productivity gains will outpace inflation.

What he learned at Careem is the most grounded insight in the conversation: once users put money into a closed-loop wallet, usage went up two and a half to three times. Single-feature standalone apps never scale, but embed money movement into a regular use case and the stickiness multiplies. That principle, he argues, is exactly what the Gulf’s AI infrastructure build-out is replicating at a sovereign level.

On Abu Dhabi’s five gigawatt AI campus, his read is precise: whoever has cheap energy wins in compute and storage. This region has natural gas, 365 days of sunlight, and the fiscal space to invest in renewables and nuclear. Not every emerging market can build its own, and that is exactly why the Gulf will service the region around it.
